The new year is here and with 2022 firmly behind us, we’re looking at key trends for electric underfloor heating in 2023.
2022 brought a number of industry developments, including the introduction of new Part L building regulations and a greater focus on renewables and a ‘greener’ future.
With expected repercussions of the Part L changes, the Net Zero target getting ever closer and an on-going cost-of-living crisis, 2023 is set to be just as eventful.

The effects of Part L building regulation changes
In June 2022, the UK government updated the Part L building regulations.
As part of their efforts to meet Net Zero targets, they outlined that all new homes must produce 31% fewer carbon emissions than was previously acceptable, while all commercial buildings must produce 27% fewer emissions.
In addition to this, the government’s Future Homes Standard plan dictates that emissions will be reduced even further by 2025.
Due to the energy efficiency of electric underfloor heating, these legislation changes have already resulted in increased demand.
Unlike a traditional boiler and radiator heating system, electric underfloor heating is suitable for low-carbon homes which are set to become the norm under the updated regulations.
Throughout 2023 and beyond, we expect this rise in demand to continue – especially as the changes set out for 2025 are getting closer.
Preparing for Net Zero with increased demand for electricity
The UK government has outlined its plans to reach carbon neutrality (Net Zero) by 2050.
As part of this goal, the government released their white paper ‘Powering Our Net Zero Future’, which identifies electricity as essential to the move away from fossil fuels – and subsequently achieving Net Zero.
Alongside clearly outlining that electricity is key to our future, this effectively condemns current gas boilers as unsuitable, therefore paving the way for electricity to become the main contender for powering the UK’s heating.

In preparation for Net Zero 2050, we’re expecting the focus on sustainability as well as renewable energy to grow even further in 2023.
In fact, over 40% of the UK’s electricity is currently generated by renewable sources and the International Energy Agency predicts that renewable energy will overtake coal by as early as 2025.

A 2022 Rated People study revealed that 63% of tradespeople actively make climate conscious decisions, such as recommending and using more eco-conscious products.
Electric underfloor heating can help tradespeople go greener due to its energy efficiency and compatibility with eco-friendly legislation, making it likely to be a key part of tradespeople’s sustainability efforts in 2023.
Cutting costs in a cost-of-living crisis
2022 saw the start of a cost-of-living crisis, part of which was caused by an unprecedented rise in wholesale gas and electricity prices.
This resulted in rising heating bills for people across the UK, meaning many households were making dedicated efforts to save money and energy.
With energy costs predicted to rise again – and government help towards bills in jeopardy – 2023 is likely to see even more cost-cutting as consumers search for ways to reduce their usage and improve their home’s energy efficiency.
