A brighter lighting solution

Rotork is a market-leading global provider of mission-critical flow control and instrumentation solutions for the industrial actuation and flow control markets. It has more than 3,000 employees operating from the company’s sites around the world serving 170 countries with a full range of products including actuators, gearboxes, instrumentation and control, and valve accessories.
Its operation in Leeds manufactures gearboxes and actuators and comprises offices, stores, and assembly lines.
Replacing fluorescent tubes with higher performance LED fittings
As part of Rotork’s group-wide Scope 2 GHG emissions reduction efforts, maintenance engineer Gary Harmer looked for replacements for the fluorescent tubes that had been illuminating the building.
He said: “Some of the fluorescent fittings in our Leeds office started to fail and I replaced them with NVC Lighting’s OREGON fittings on a trial basis. I was impressed both by the quality of the product build, the mounting options, and the electrical connections.”
OREGON is a high-performance fitting with a wide range of options and features and is available with 4 lumen output levels all of which can be supplied with a standard 90°lens or a high-rack version for narrower light distribution. Efficiency is up to 142l/lm/c.W and a range of dimming options are available.
NVC Lighting developed a bespoke solution for Rotork that cuts costs and emissions
When it came to replacing the remaining almost 200 fluorescent fittings throughout the Leeds site, Gary approached his local Rexel branch for advice. They put him in contact with NVC’ Lighting’s Northern area sales manager who visited Rotork to undertake a survey and take lux readings.
The survey recommended using PIR controlled OREGON 24,000 lm luminaires and showed that this solution would allow Rotork to make savings annually as well as cut CO2 emissions significantly.
Gary continues: “NVC Lighting’s survey presented a compelling case for Rotork’s plc board to approve the proposed solution.”
Control system cuts energy use and makes for better workplace
All the OREGON fittings were supplied with PIRs which have been set so that the lights are turned off after 10 minutes of inactivity underneath them, which significantly reduces the energy used. In addition, they are much brighter than the fluorescent fittings so that the working environment in the offices, stores and assembly lines is much more pleasant too.
Gary concluded: “NVC Lighting’s OREGON luminaires were easy to retrofit and required minimal changes from where the previous fittings had been. They are also much lighter and redundant DALI network cabling could be removed, so there is less weight on the roof structure which is an added advantage.”
