Kingspan Adds Spice to Saffron House

The Kingspan KoolDuct System has been fitted by PMP Manufacturing as part of the major refurbishment of the lower ground floor of an office building in Farringdon, providing a Grade-A space which has achieved an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of A and a BREEAM rating of Excellent.

The refurbishment of the lower ground floor of Saffron House was designed by Ben Adams Architects and overseen by project managers, Avison Young. The Cat-A specification included replacement of the street level glazing to create a more design-led frontage with open-plan internal spaces featuring exposed beams and services. A new End-of-Trip facility for bikes has also been created, including extensive bike storage and maintenance spaces along with showers and locker rooms.

Sale Group and consultants, The Anslow Partnership, oversaw extensive changes to the building services specification. This included reconfiguring the lower ground floor to operate as a standalone floor separate to the remainder of the building as well as replacing the existing chiller system with a more efficient modular system. PMP Manufacturing fabricated ductwork from the Kingspan KoolDuct System to connect to the new units, servicing the office spaces.

The pre-insulated design of The Kingspan KoolDuct System allows it to be used to form ductwork with air-leakage rates at a fraction of those from conventional lagged galvanised steel ductwork, meeting air-leakage Class C at medium pressure and even class D at low pressure. In combination with the premium performance phenolic insulation core of the panels, which minimises heat transfer from the ductwork, this specification supported work to notably reduce the energy demand associated with the mechanical ventilation system.

The system’s innovative design also supported a fast-track installation by delivery partner PMP Manufacturing. As the system panels are pre-insulated, the ducting could be fitted in a single operation, rather than having to fit steel ductwork and lag it separately. The foil-faced panels also support simple on-site modification with standard tools where required whilst its lightweight design also allowed sections to be fabricated in several metre lengths then lifted and installed easily.

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is available for the Kingspan KoolDuct insulation panel, supporting whole life assessments.
